What keeps going after the two weeks, and what you can join without them

One to one mentoring

Book a timed session with a mentor and work on your thing: a mix that will not sit, a rate you cannot defend, a record you cannot finish. Notes and what you agreed are kept afterwards, so the next session starts where the last one stopped.

The community

A moderated forum where you post a mix and get a real critique. Most of the learning that sticks happens in a thread about somebody's actual problem rather than in a lesson about a hypothetical one.

The business side

What to charge, how to scope a job, what a quiet March does to your year. It runs as part of the craft here, because a producer who cannot price a job does not stay a producer for long.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to learn music production?
Long enough to be honest about: most people get a usable grasp of recording and mixing in six to twelve months of steady work, and keep improving for years after. The Academy's two-week intensives are designed to compress the part that is hardest to learn alone, which is watching decisions get made in a real room, and then to keep supporting the work afterwards.
Are the courses online or in person?
The two main programmes are in person, full time for two weeks, at The Avenue Recording Studio in Melbourne. What runs online is the mentoring, the community and the producer tools, which you can use from anywhere and which carry on long after the two weeks finish.
Is the Academy of Audio an accredited course provider?
The programmes are professional training rather than a government-accredited qualification. You finish with skills, finished work and a certificate from the Academy. We say that plainly rather than leaving it vague, because it is the sort of thing you should know before you enrol.
Do I need my own studio to start?
No. You need a computer, headphones or monitors you know the sound of, and a way to get audio in. A great deal of the craft is listening and decision making, which you can practise on material you already have.
Can I join from outside Melbourne?
The community, the mentoring and the tools are online and open to members anywhere. The two-week programmes are in person, so those mean travelling to Melbourne for the fortnight.
How do I join?
For the in-person programmes, applications are on the Academy site. For the online membership, the Academy is invite-only: request access, tell us where you are up to, and we will come back to you either way.
